I did three research projects that resulted in a publication during my master's in Artificial Intelligence and also collaborated twice with people from different fields (physics, game theory) after this. In all cases, it was nice to see how helpful my 'standard in combinatorics' (or even in mathematics) insights were in a field where these were not as well-known.

This paper in information retrieval simplifies an existing technique (noting two quantites are independent, a formula could be simplified and was thereby easier to compute) and provides experimental evidence of the improvements; we observed this during a student project for a course and then the supervisor Anne Schuth wrote the paper.
Willem Röpke, Carla Groenland, Roxana Rădulescu, Ann Nowé, Diederik M. Roijers, Bridging the Gap Between Single and Multi Objective Games. Conference publication: AAMAS 2023.
A talented PhD student (Willem) together with the other co-authors found a nice connection between multi-objective games and continuous games; via Diederik, I helped him with the mathematical tools. Authors are not alphabetical on purpose: Willem did most of the research and writing and the last authors are the key supervisors.
Koen Groenland, Carla Groenland and Reinier Kramer, Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage-like protocols for amplitude transfer generalize to many bipartite graphs, Journal of Mathematical Physics, 61(7):072201, 2020. Together with my brother and a researcher in mathematical physics, we studied what graph properties would allow a certain physics transfer protocol to work well. The last two authors are alphabetical. The first author did most of the research and writing.
